| Electrical energy and alumina are the basic raw materials to produce primary aluminium. |
The electrical energy required by an aluminium reduction plant of the size of Aluar's installations in Puerto Madryn, is equivalent to the electrical energy requirements of a town with more than a million and a half inhabitants.
In order to guarantee the supply of part of its electric power demand, in 1995 Aluar bought 59% of the shares of Hidroeléctrica Futaleufú S.A. (Today Aluar owns 60.2%) This hydroelectric power station, with a generating capacity of 472 MW, is the main power supplier of the Patagonian Electrical Network. In 1995, Aluar bought 20,4% of TRANSPA S.A., a company that transports high tension electrical power in mid-Patagonia. This last company is in charge of the operation and maintenance of two 330 KV lines that cover 550 Km, from the Futaleufú power station to Puerto Madryn.
The rest of the electrical power is produced by Aluar's on-site thermoelectric station, which has an installed capacity of 755 MW. The station, equipped with gas turbines and a combined cycle plant, is comprised by four 22.5 MW turbines, two 40 MW turbines and two up-to-date technology 585 MW combined cycle power generation systems.
Gas supply is guaranteed by long term contracts signed with the natural gas production and transport companies.
This power supply configuration has enabled Aluar to have a reliable supply of electrical energy.
